About Alastair Hunter

Alastair Hunter looked around at sundials and felt inspired to try his own imagination on these familiar garden ornaments. Within a short period he started to recognise possibilities for sculpture, and a mathematical need for precision, in this his new experience of creative work.

Alastair draws on engineering experience in energy, aerospace and agriculture, and he tries to sculpt the special intricacies of sundial alignments into forms that help us see and understand more of the world around us. He mainly works in brass and stainless steel, and looks for pleasing ways of matching sundial and pedestal in ceramic, steel, and stone.

Artist Statement of Alastair Hunter

I love finding new ways to make beautiful sundials, which can bring some of the mysteries of the solar system right down into our gardens. The scope for exploring how to display sunshine and shadows and combine these with the science of sundials is endless and fascinating, it offers a lifetime of pleasure to come. Generally stainless steel is my medium, a material both precise and versatile, which can produce marvellous effects in bright sunlight outdoors, or under cloudy skies, and even in the rain.
